Project Description

TRANSACTION LEDGERS

The carbon credit industry is highly regulated and subject to frequent audits. Operations mangers are expected to track data revisions and explain past states to auditors - often needing to “travel back in time”.

This level of traceability is essential for compliance, builds trust and overtime, allows the company to improve overall quality and maximise pricing of each carbon credit.

The Challenge

Traditional spreadsheets lack auditability. When multiple users update the same records, changes are rarely tracked with sufficient detail, making it difficult to know what changed, when, or why.

At the same time, compliance requirements in the carbon credit market continue to tighten. Project developers increasingly need to demonstrate data integrity and historical accuracy to maintain their licence to operate—before BlueLayer, no dedicated tool existed to support these specialised workflows.

The Solutions

-> TRANSACTION LEDGERS

This banking-style transaction feature shows how credits move through the system over time. Each transaction was written in a human-readable manner using a mix of icons, line breaks and natural language labels (Such as “When”, “Amount”, “From”) to make sure the reader can reduce cognitive load and quickly recall the context.

Each transactions is also presented as a dedicated content box, intentionally avoiding dense table formats for easy skimming. When needed, users can open the individual transaction to view more details and add notes.

->  HUMAN READABLE AUDIT LOGS

A chronological, human-readable timestamp of each system activity.

Each entry captures the user who made the change, the timestamp and the exact field-level changes, with links to related records for deeper investigation when needed.

Impact

  • Faster discrepancy resolution - When needed, users can pinpoint exactly when and why data changed

  • Increase customer retention and trust - Customers are incentivise to store and manage data in BL for traceability, making it harder to switch competitors

  • Public testimonials from prolific customers

My role

  • UX lead

  • User researcher

About this company

Bluelayer.io
Founding product designer
Oct 2022 - Jan 2026

BlueLayer is an inventory, revenue, and data management platform for carbon project developers.

The main user of BlueLayer is the operations manager who oversees this lifecycle end to end—coordinating with finance and sales to calculate availability, revenue forecasts, manage delivery, and report to leadership.

I partnered closely with the founders to shape product direction while staying close to the design craft, establishing strong design foundations and UX quality to scale quickly.

I contributed to 30+ features and iterations, helping secure 30+ enterprise paying customers in a short period of time of 2 years.

About carbon projects

Projects vastly vary in size, footprint and complexity, with budgets ranging from $10m for some of the smaller, agroforestry projects, to over $30bn for flagship Bio-energy projects.

Managing the credit lifecycle of a carbon project is complex and variable. Projects often have very long horizons, sometimes spanning over 40 years, with multiple phases of development starting with project design, moving through phases of validation, registration and implementation and then ending with lengthy periods where credits are issued.
